I confess it's actually deeply hilarious when one of them goes, "How can James Barry be a trans man when no one knew what that word meant back then and the concept of a 'trans man' is so rooted in modern culture? Obviously she was a butch lesbian"https://twitter.com/9BillionTigers/status/1379041940482580480 …

I think he'd be deeply confused to be accused of being a butcher from the Greek island of Lesbos "You must have me confused with some other man"

(And if he did know of "lesbian" as a metaphorical term from reading Swinburne's poetry he'd probably be really pissed All the "queer is a slur" people don't seem to know that "gay" and "lesbian" BOTH started out meaning "slutty" rather than having to do with orientation)

When you see people complaining about memes re: "gay haircuts" and "gay fashion" and "gay culture" "Wtf is all this party/youth culture bullshit associated with 'gay' When did 'gay' stop just meaning 'homosexual'" I understand the complaint my friend but hold up just a second

Like look at the word "gay" What does it actually literally mean in the dictionary That IS what it originally meant, it's just kept that stable meaning for decades while also having this secondary meaning expand out of control

Same with Tumblr using "the straights" to mean being conformist, conservative and boring That's literally also what it meant first

It's all over 60's counterculture in this usage, "straight society" being used by dudes who would be v upset if you suggested they liked men

It's interesting reading about the Mattachine Society and how they tried to deliberately, consciously invent a respectability-politics version of "gay culture" that had not existed before To create this idea of the wholesome middle-class white-picket-fence gay couple whole cloth

Including deliberately inventing a new word other than "gay" ("homophiles") Predictably, it did not take off, and Stonewall sent everything going the exact opposite direction ("We're not gonna make a straight version of gay subculture we're gonna make straight society gay")
