I confess a lot of my antipathy for this word comes from my fundie past, where in context it meant "Having to periodically confess to your fellow teens every week if you'd swore or looked at porn"https://twitter.com/marysuewriter/status/1379121905785921536 …

"Accountability partners" were a legit social fad when I was in high school, part of the creepy Panopticonization of fundie youth culture (the era of Josh Harris' book I Kissed Dating Goodbye and "modern courtship culture" where your parents had to be involved in your love life)

It's fucked up, and on the male side of things it's tied to fucked up fratboy hazing ritual culture Some kid died when I was in high school because he and his buddies had a thing where you got socked in the stomach by everyone in the group after confessing a sin

It was like how Harry Houdini died Got socked in the stomach five times for saying the F-word, died in the hospital that weekend of internal bleeding This got shared to us as a POSITIVE STORY about a boy who died because of his great devotion to Christ

Anyway, lurid stories aside, "accountability" as a word seems to me to be this escalation from the idea of "responsibility" It's a question-begging word - it asserts right away that I have to answer to you, specifically, for any wrongdoing I commit
