Was MLK a "populist", or Malcolm X, or Jesse Jackson? No? They had a lot of fans who saw them as a charismatic leader - Not enough people? Really? Because there's some nutjobs who get called "populist" who aren't very popular - Oh, I see, not *people enough*

Yeah I get why you use the word "populist" to mean "stirring up the majority demographic against minorities" It's still a fucking euphemism

That's what populism has always meant in the US though, since at least the time of William Jennings Bryan. His Populist Party was heavily anti-immigrant, pitted the good honest farmers against "Rothschild bankers", had KKK chapters, and Marion Butler in leadership. Ugly history.

Bryan was economically left though Trump is still orthodox GOP on economics

A lot of populist movements we covered in history class were either high key or low key xenophobic. “Populism” immediately gets my heckles up because it was/is often used in place of “white supremacist” or “white nationalist.”
-
This. “Populism” inherent segregates people into us (“common folk”) and them (“elites”). Guess where this leads! This is why I was uncomfortable with Bernie Sanders’ campaign and it’s various offshoots.
