I sense this stupid Twitter "controversy" over a US elected official expressing the heresy of Pelagianism might get us another Liz Bruenig column about Augustine

If you seriously immerse yourself in all the theology people wrote up about the nature of atonement and salvation and divine grace etc you will have 1) wasted an immense amount of time and money, and 2) to the extent you take any of it seriously, be a weird prick

Anyway, look, as much as later Church leaders tried to pretend the original Apostles were one big happy family, obviously there was tension between Paul and James that Paul attests to in his letters

And the Epistle of James ended up in the canon despite some people's best efforts because, frankly, Paul's "camp" without any counterbalance from the "other side" makes Christianity monstrous

Faith without works is dead You can talk until you're blue in the face about atonement and divine grace and whatnot but if you're still an asshole no one has any reason to carepic.twitter.com/PwmC52mSFP

Jesus said this: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater.” - Mark 12:31 Everything else written about Christianity was an attempt to meld various gospels, letters written by Paul, and the cultural goals of the early church leaders.

A friend went to a church up the street from me, in shorts, and got "saved" by Christ. When he next went to the church, the pastor told him he had to wear long pants to church, so he stopped going. A church member explained to me, "saved" peo who've been saved must wear pants.
