1/ A few people are mad at me because a philosopher who doesn't like me created a 2.5 hour video about why I'm wrong about GD stuff and I'm (obviously!) not going to watch it. (GamerGaters were the last people who asked me to watch 2-hour rebuttal YouTube videos.) The problem is:

2/ This person doesn't really know about this issue. She doesn't know what "clinically referred" means. She implies Dutch people are bringing their kids into the Amsterdam clinic just sorta for the hell of it or outta transphobia/homophobia. But you can just *read the research*pic.twitter.com/2LKSBrDYay

3/ and see that most of the kids in the clinic met the DSM IV criteria for what was Gender Identity Disorder, which (rumors to the contrary notwithstanding) does mean someone is rather dysphoric. So what she's doing is trolling. She is taking a body of clinical research that ispic.twitter.com/4U4NgDXJDc

4/ pretty thorough when it comes to documentation (whatever else you think about it) and then lazily, breezily posing well-poisoning questions that she wouldn't have if she'd spent a tiny bit of time reading. There's nothing to be gained from engaging with someone like this. Fin.

She's a graduate student in philosophy who's known to do these hit pieces on people who ask questions about gender identity, the safety of medical transition, the social consequences of trans women allowed into sex-segregated spaces, etc.

Applying scrutiny to the claims of bigots and liars is only a "hit piece" in the sense that the person's argument is complete bullshit and they're using it to dishonestly advance their own career or gain clout.

Clearly you think ppl raising legitimate concerns are bigots & liars. That’s nothing new. But to try to claim that doing so is a way to advance one’s career or gain clout, in this context, is ludicrous given that the consequences of doing so are the exact opposite.

Are you going to try to claim with a straight face that Jesse has not advanced his career or gained clout How many other Atlantic articles have been directly cited in recent legislation

Kathleen Stock was a fucking nobody in a field no one cared about ("philosophy of fiction", analytic philosophers trying to step on the literature department's turf) Now she's been inducted into the Order of the British Empire for heroically defending women

Part of the game is that they pretend it they are horribly persecuted outcasts, rather than this is an incredibly lucrative career that requires little effort.
