(His depression isn't really him giving into pride and selfishness It's the opposite, it's him being fully overcome by humility and his compassion manifesting as overwhelming fear of failure He performs his douchiness because people must not look up to him as a hero ever again)

Huh, this is a good way of putting it. I initially didn't like it because it felt like unlike everyone else his suffering was played as more of a joke but that interpretation definitely works.
