I should mention this one time Jesse was doing the performative "Are there ANY trans philosophers who've even TRIED to give a theory of what gender is?" and one person was like "If you're really serious you could try Talia Bettcher" and he's like "Ok! You Bettcher!" So punchablehttps://twitter.com/arthur_affect/status/1377843308664250370 …

The corny-ass dad joke as part of this whole act Just like deliberately trying to pretend "I have no idea why trans people hate me, I didn't do anything to be hated, we're all friends here aren't we"

It's shitty af It's part of what people call "gaslighting" when done in intimate contexts although in a large public space it's just being a douche

If you actually seriously want to bridge a gap with someone who believes you harmed them then you *act like someone who harmed them* You act sorry, you walk on eggshells until things are cool between you again

Or if you're Jesse, you take a tweet like the above out of context and go "Demanding that I walk on eggshells? That's classic emotional abuse! These people are abusers!"

I don't even think it's necessarily an agenda -- a lot of Jesse's opinions are in the same genre of crypto-conservative "PC cancel culture run amok!" shittiness, but he gets like this even about stupid, petty, trivial shit based on stuff he was completely randomly wrong about

I think he's just straight up incapable of being humble He feels like having to be *actually sorry* in front of trans activists is having to lick boots, it's beneath his dignity So he goes rampaging in the other direction

Like yeah sure I think he's honest about this one facet of his endless self-defensive self-pitying repeated rant It's not that people "disagree" so much as they have the temerity to be *mad* To act like this has *stakes*, like it *matters* beyond this ivory tower debate

That his article did *tangible harm* and it doesn't matter what he thinks he meant by it, it matters what actually happened in the world as a result of him writing it He just absolutely refuses to think in those terms, it's a level of responsibility he refuses to take

Replying to @arthur_affect
But like the way people he complains about "just happen" to get harassment from fans he disavows, it's completely implausible that he doesn't know what's going on, there. He can *say* he isn't responsible all he likes.
