One of the goofier and therefore less offensive LessWrong posts I remember was imagining if we somehow actually did have a utopian Star Trek future where the human population "expands to fill the stars" There'd be enough people that every one of us could be a PhD dissertation

Like if there's a quadrillion human beings out there and a tiny percentage of them want to go into the field of "21st-century studies" then every single one of them could choose to take a specific person with a sufficiently large digital footprint from our era and study them

Which is really just talking about the fact that documentation is so much more extensive in our era than it was in, say, ancient Greece, that *in theory* records could be preserved unchanged for much longer using modern tech, and that the population will have grown exponentially
