I don't think people talk enough about the extent to which Hatoful Boyfriend borked the trajectory of the genrehttps://twitter.com/Cheratomo/status/1377686843269865476 …

Basically it's yet another case where because the big viral hit was a genre parody, people see the genre as something to parody and everything that gets made is another parody and ironically the played-straight stuff they were parodying dies out

It's happened a couple notable times in other fields, sometimes the "death spiral" is fatal Like how Lord of the Flies killed off the "robinsonade", and now "robinsonade gone horribly wrong" (Lost etc) IS the genre

I'm not sure whether Hatoful Boyfriend or DDLC did more "damage" to dating sim VNs though I mean I'm not a dating sim connoisseur but I feel like for a long time if someone said "Hey this dating sim is actually good!" the response is "Well what's the 'twist'"

I was thinking about this but the thing is that none of these big corporations are stealing DDLC's joke, they're all stealing Hatoful Boyfriend's Much as Katawa Shoujo itself was seen as a gateway to OELVNs, I feel like DDLC worked as a gateway by deconstructing Katawa Shoujo

well okay DDLC absolutely did damage to dating sim VNs, no question but Hatoful Boyfriend went beyond that by damaging VNs entirely

Yeah DDLC doesn't treat the basic concept of the genre it's parodying as inherently mockable the way Hatoful Boyfriend comes off as doing

I guess a mainstream genre parallel would be what Not Another Teen Movie did to the "teen sex comedy" genre Like it wasn't an obvious instant death blow but it was a symptom of people starting to write this genre off and the genre becoming fully consumed by self-parody

Like arguably the Last Teen Sex Comedy was Superbad, where they've completely given up on earnestly trying to make you like or root for these characters Everyone's dickishness is just turned up to max because "That's the whole joke of a movie like this"

The death-spiral is when you get a majority of consumers for a genre openly saying "The point of this whole genre is to be stupid and to suck" Like the spiral Image Comics' most notorious superhero titles got caught up in
