I think the far-right and at least some social conservatives see the left as evil. I wonder if "how many unborn babies did you kill today?" rhetoric comes from the same instinct to pity that animates the left, albeit directed at a rather different cause.

I used the British "Tory" formulation because I think US political divides are sui generis. Their Democrats aren't really liberals, but a sort of progressive-cum-corporatist party, while their Republicans aren't really conservatives, but a sort of religious-cum-corporatist party.

In Britain they don't really. Their general response to Jeremy Corbyn was to paint him as a confused old man who would have sent the country back to the 1970s.
