Yeah this is coming down the pike too The logical next step after conversion therapy is corrective rape You see the seeds of it planted in TERF narratives like "I grew out of being a tomboy when I started dating" and "I learned how wonderful a female body is through pregnancy"https://twitter.com/drdevonprice/status/1377629446841237508 …

Noticing TERF detransitioners talking amongst themselves lately about how getting pregnant helped w their gender dysphoria. Which adds a new sinister layer to their resistance to young trans people getting blockers & their emphasis on "alternate treatments" for transness

There was an academic paper some years back on what the author called "Caddy Woodlawn syndrome" -- the storyline, extremely common in middle grade books with girl protagonists, where the girl is a tomboy and "runs wild" and hates everything girly, but

at the climax of the novel, the girl is forced into more feminine behavior and realizes it's not THAT bad and this is when she Becomes A Woman. It's a coming-of-age story arc.

C.S. Lewis's Susan narrative is the flip of this, in a lot of ways. Anyway. It's a storyline that most people who were AFAB were exposed to repeatedly as children because it's so common.

I remember a comic strip about "Samantha Dean" who went from being a tomboy to being a beauty queen in about four pages. It made me so mad I created my own wish fulfilment character called Sam Deacon who stayed resolutely masc

Oh yeah, that reminds me of a distinct but related trope: "she was never truly a tomboy, she just lacked faith in her own femininity and didn't believe she could ever be pretty." Shows up in one of the Great Brain books with "Britches Dotty."

Conversion therapy often relies EXTREMELY HEAVILY on this trope, judging from the stories in "The Last Time I Wore a Dress" by Daphne (now Dylan) Scholinski (the book is still published under the name Daphne, which is why I included it here.)

Dylan was sent for inpatient psychiatric treatment of "gender identity disorder" -- at the time they were trying to conversion-therapy him out of being a butch lesbian. This was in the early 1980s. This both did not work, and did not help him with his actual depression at all.

The standard narrative of all conversion therapy has generally been "It's normal for kids to have 'confused feelings' in childhood and lose them when they grow up" "Our patients just missed out on some step in the maturation process that we now have to replace"

This was accepted scientific wisdom back in the day, so much so that you'll constantly see references to homosexuality as "immaturity" in old books, like being gay is normal for silly teenagers and gay adults are Peter Pans and Wendys who never grew up

When you combine that with the parallel narrative of "no one actually likes being married, it's just A Thing You Do, and if you're lucky, you actually like the person you married in the long run" it ends up looking really sad and like a lot of people are in heavy denial.
