"Transition was shown to greatly reduce rates of suicidal ideation and suicide attempt. In total, 67 per cent of respondents thought about suicide more before they transitioned and only 3 per cent thought about suicide more post-transition. https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Sonja-Ellis/publication/281441727_Suicide_risk_in_the_UK_Trans_population_and_the_role_of_gender_transition_in_decreasing_suicidal_ideation_and_suicide_attempt/links/55f753b908aeafc8abfed03f/Suicide-risk-in-the-UK-Trans-population-and-the-role-of-gender-transition-in-decreasing-suicidal-ideation-and-suicide-attempt.pdf …

I have no doubt that transition is the right thing for some people to do. But for others it is not, and we're really not allowed to fully look into that at this point in history. One is seen as phobic if they feel that not enough is understood yet.

He's pushing a line that *by default* we should *deny* care. Not just transition, but puberty blockers to delay the choice. We don't know everything, but we do know enough to know that puberty blockers and openness to later transition are by far net positives.

Not sure about the claims you're making here, but what do you think of that part of the Hippocratic Oath where it says "first do no harm"?

Every single treatment in existence has a risk of harm - as treatments go this one is actually probably tuned considerably safer than most because of the moral conservatism surrounding it. Interpreting "first do no harm" in the way you imply would be the destruction of medicine.

It would be great if we had greater understanding of these issues so that we could better provide care - but the existence of the Hippocratic oath doesn't mean we should increase barriers to health care ad infinitum (and this same argument applies to literally any procedure).

Right, I mean give the wrong person penicillin and they're dead within minutes. This has never led us to believe that penicillin should be banned, this has led us to be careful about how penicillin is administered.

People shouldn't be told they need penicillin when they do not. People understand this because it's not a politicized topic.

Believe me I think I'm speaking for basically the whole trans community when I say I'd -love- for this to not be a politicized topic

Me too!!! And I wish the politicization wasn't coming primarily from the hardline ideological left.

The concept of a "detransitioner movement" is inherently politicization It is taking an individual story of someone feeling like they made a mistake that they regret and leveraging it to exert power over everyone else's future decisions

It's what anti-choice people have been doing with women who express regret about abortions for decades.

It's like finding the one needle in a haystack and saying that all haystacks are just stuffed full of needles and it's proof that all hay should be treated like needles. You found the one out of the thousand that fits your argument, sure, but that's 0.1% of the relevant people.
