Right, but that doesn't quite work either... If there were a single optimum that balances desirability vs cost, everyone would evolve toward that optimum

In my mind, this phenotypic variability suggests that desires, too, are variable. In this case, rather than competition for the "most desirable" mate, we get sorting into compatible pairs (which is the most efficient for the population anyhow)
