I think one of the ugly side effects of constant Internet-debating about trans rights -- something I've probably contributed to -- is the idea that the debate itself determines the validity of the concept, that transness is on trial in a courtroom or something

Specifically on the sports issue, I think both sides need to do more work to come up with a best solution. Outside of that I pretty much agree

Nope. Trans people participating in sport alongside cis people is fine, actually.

https://www.politico.com/f/?id=00000178-1a7a-d750-a77a-3efba0ac0000 … a majority of registered voters support the bans. Popular opinion swung in favor of previous civil rights moments in large part due to superior arguments. The case still needs to be made imo

"in large part due to superior arguments"? Have you read the thread you are replying to? Also, let me be polite with you here: I really don't give a damn whether you think the case needs to be made or not, and nor should any right-thinking person The case has been made

Imagine MLK deciding not to go to Selma because “the case had already been made” during the March on Washington

So what you're actually saying is the case *has* already been made and we should switch to making large, dramatic gestures for the purpose of illustrating that continued failure to acknowledge that will no longer be tolerated. Cool, works for me!

MLK was absolutely not a "policy analyst" or "scientist" of any kind, he was a literal preacher, and his speeches and demonstrations are 180-degrees apart from anything you might call "rational debate" He had plenty of critics saying so at the time

The hilarious thing about what a Rorschach blot MLK has become is how wildly people project not just ideas/opinions but *tones of voice* and *methodology* onto him that he had nothing to do with MLK never, once, soberly "debated Black crime statistics" with a racist police chief

I’m pretty sure MLK did in fact make persuasive arguments that racism was a problem. Look at this excerpt from his letter from Birmingham jail:pic.twitter.com/gYinpjHNsB

I think it's a strawman to say anyone, including me, says that MLK's Step 1 here, "finding the facts", has no place in life or activism whatsoever I think it's very clear now that there's a concerted effort to keep trans activism *trapped* in Step 1 and never moving past

We can't even get to Step 2, negotiation, because we're still stuck on Step 1 (how can the "trans community" make demands if their existence as such isn't acknowledged?) And Step 3, self-purification, is, of course, the dreaded and much-maligned "cancel culture"

from my limited perspective there are still quite a few well meaning centrist-types that are worth engaging in step 2. For those stuck in step 1 of course that’s problematic
