It's like people who think they can write like Hunter S. Thompson because they do an insane amount of drugs, ignoring the fact that Thompson was (at least early on) very much a writer who just happened to do drugs, not an addict who just happened to write.

I think some of Lennon’s best work was done without the aid of drugs, but also that most of his great work would not have happened if he’d never done drugs.
