Yep! Very different argument, though; the argument here is that *even if we could exactly quantify meritocracy,* it would still be bad. Which I find at least somewhat compelling!
Right, again, not saying this is simple or easy to resolve or anything like that! But there is a big difference between "merit is difficult to define and not unipolar," which seems very sensible and "merit cannot be defined," which seemed to be the implication of your tweet.
The problem is virtually everything has merit to someone. The idea that we're ever going to find some set of common denominators to define it, even in very loose terms, to be usable and valuable is specious at best. I get where you're coming from, it's not a thing.
Let's even set aside the unproven idea that there's such a thing as being "generally good at everything" (the general factor of intelligence or whatever) How does this solve the problem that elites are selfish and will fuck other people over for their own benefit
