People say that the modern SAT is much easier to study for than in the past. My biggest struggle was on the verbal one so if I could give high school me any advice, it would be to practice the grammar/vocab questions

The reason that I bring up it being easier to study is because some 40 year old is gonna tell you “just don’t study for it. It won’t help.” That’s probably not true anymore

Hey dude the fact that it's possible to significantly raise your score on the SAT by specifically studying to take the test - a skill unrelated to any of the real-life skills that supposedly correlate with "scholastic aptitude" - means the people you were dunking on are correct

in fact thats pretty much everything wrong with the US school system in particular. Its all about cramming in the knowledge for those tests and then people forget about 90% of it because its not actually useful information retained in long term memory.

The most effective SAT prep courses aren't even about cramming for the information being tested on, just teaching "test-taking skills" about the test itself Which is why they very effectively prove that the test is a bad measure of real life ability

The SATs are pretty gameable—by studying for and practicing for the test you can gain about 100 points in most cases. this makes it one of the least gameable/arbitrary aspects college admissions.

Don’t forget speed. It’s not just the SAT but also LSAT and similar. It doesn’t necessarily even favor the people who get the right answers or who would be able to get the most right answers. It favors those who get the most right answers the fastest.
