Lol and that episode doesn't even make this thread of "The Worst of Hey Hey It's Saturday" I guess that incident was only particularly notable for Americans

Jfc I remember this, they bullied Kamahl in that segment, even though he wasn't on the show anymore They had a bit where a sketch artist doodled commentary on what was going on and during the blackface act he doodled "Where's Kamahl?" and did a caricature of him

And then like after Harry Connick Jr had a live freakout onstage all the people connected to the show told the media "Wow I never expected this big shot American to overreact like this to our little joke" and Kamahl just said "This is why I quit It was like this every day"

Australia has an insidious mindset on racism, in that it's all a joke all the time If you play along, even if you're the butt of the joke, then there's no issue But don't ever raise an issue, bc. it is always a joke It's the perfect culture to never explore your own bigotry

Harry Connick Jr didn't even have a freakout. He was on a panel judging a skit, the skit was 5 Aussies doing blackface with big afro wigs and lipsyncing Jackson He gave it a zero and said it was disgusting and the response was just utter incredulousness that there was a problem

Yup, the act called itself "the Jackson Jive" And they were a *returning* act from the show's original run, which is why they were incredulous the blackface was some kind of problem Layers upon layers

Fwiw I didn't mean to insult Connick by saying he "had a freakout" He expressed himself as graciously in the moment as I think anyone could be expected to I just think the clip is hilarious because as soon as they cut to him you can see this deer in headlights look on his face

I don't remember what year that was, but several years later, I went into music I put together a briefing package which used a completely unrelated performance by Connick to demonstrate how to re-sync a live band in the event of a communication failure

I was asked to take it out, and, while it wasn't said in exactly these words, the implication was very much "referring to Harry Connick Jr in a positive light signals preachy SJWism and we don't want to seem like those kind of people here"

This is fucking off the chain I mean Jesus Christ it's not like he went looking for blackface in Australia to expose They literally flew him out there and put him on the judge's table and asked him point blank what he thought of the act

You're objectively correct The way it was covered was very "well fuck him for being so easily offended then" and it took years for anyone except, like, the Greens (who were much less influential back then) to admit he might have a point
