The fun thing about everyone knowing the Charlton Comics characters in their dark gritty incarnations from Watchmen is that now it's basically a reference in reverse Peacemaker is the goofy, silly version of the Comedian Just taking the piss out of that whole concept

Casting John Cena as "douchey Captain America" and having him bloviate about how he's so devoted to his country he'll do *anything* regardless of morality and decency if ordered by his superiors, including eating nay, not just a bag a dicks but a whole BEACH of dicks

It's like the DCAU doing the Question as a pisstake on the Rorschach archetype (this unhinged Qanon conspiracy theory dude who's a gigantic annoying pain in the ass)

They haven't elaborated on movie!Peacemaker's backstory yet and why he's in prison and forced to join the Suicide Squad but I like to think it's like the Soldier from Team Fortress 2 They never actually let him join the military because he's TOO patriotic

He THINKS he's this ultimate black ops assassin like the Comedian or the Winter Soldier whose missions are so top-secret most of the government doesn't know he exists But he's not, he's just an unhinged wackjob

i love things like that.. I think Sherlock Holmes and Batman have had that interplay. Batman's original archetyps was as the world's greatest detective, Holmes with a security belt. But how the way Holmes is portrayed, its seems the influence is going the other way

The RDJ version is more like a vigelante superhero movie than pure mystery, and the Cumberbach version is all that post-killing joke/DKR territory of being a deeply psychologically damaged "hero" who fights crime out of compulsion not virtue

The irony is that at the time the Charlton characters are the ones that were taken "seriously." Like Alan Moore bitterly regretted that, say, Rorschach (practically a dark parody) achieved stealth popular while Steve Ditko took The Question's Objectivism very seriously.
