I'm glad that the new Suicide Squad finally understands what makes the whole concept of the Suicide Squad work, which is that it's a celebration of how stupid comics are

It's already hilarious in the first place to imagine the prison that all of the ridiculous villains Batman has beat up over his career ended up in, trying to to hold on to their particular gimmick while incarcerated Then you imagine them all being put on a super team

So yeah Gunn is already going for broke with what the first movie did perfunctorily They just had one guy who shows up to get killed off (Slipknot) The whole reason it's called Suicide Squad is "These are characters editorial doesn't care about, let's make it a bloodbath"

(For the same reason, it's completely fitting to have this franchise be completely rebooted with a new director and almost all new characters after the first movie flopped That, too, is completely in the tradition of the Suicide Squad)

I mean, in-universe, the swerve in direction for the Squad is obviously because the first incarnation of Task Force X was a massive fiasco that Waller had to kill her own staff to cover up Because she made the obvious mistake of picking villains who were too powerful

So the new plan is one that's far more logical for this basic concept of something called the Suicide Squad Quantity over quality Just pile on all the throwaway villains of the week the Justice League put away before the opening credits of the episode

My headcanon is Pete Davidson's character (Blackguard) doesn't even have any special powers or abilities He's just literally Pete Davidson if his comedy career failed and he tried to turn to a life of crime
