It's kind of hilarious how he describes people everyone hates being widely attacked as a "tactic" carried out by some kind of sinister puppetmasters instead of just being... what happenshttps://twitter.com/ggreenwald/status/1375079174440955912 …

I think it's overused because many people are passingly familiar with it but haven't actually thought about it in a meaningful way. I also think certain people will never find a hard-fought, slow, incremental uphill battle for change they *can't* call a slippery slope.

The poem only makes sense if the escalation of who "they" "come for" has some kind of moral dimension to it, some element of "I thought the Communists were just crazy people but they had a point all along" Otherwise you make it a general argument against anyone doing anything

People turning the poem into "First they came for the Nazis" when the "they" in the poem IS THE NAZIS and the thing the poem is complaining about is people NOT coming for the Nazis when they had a chance

His sentiment includes regret at not defending communists because he (like most) bought into the propaganda. I see an intention to say, 'I was blinded to the fact these people were not the enemy, and I only realized it when it was my turn'.
