I think it's overused because many people are passingly familiar with it but haven't actually thought about it in a meaningful way. I also think certain people will never find a hard-fought, slow, incremental uphill battle for change they *can't* call a slippery slope.

I've thought of it more as (without actually knowing the numbers) that they were the smallest group & therefore easiest to remove without much fuss, particularly with antipathy to their politics or protests included. That if none particularly affected your life, it didn't matter.
