For anything that people aren't trying to stamp out as a disease they just don't use the word "contagion" No one has ever used the term "social contagion" for deciding to go to college or have kids because your friends are doing it

social contagion is literally the social science term. This is like when people dishonesty use the term "Theory" in the sciences to attack evolution

I have NEVER heard anyone calling transitioning, or anything else, a ‘social contagion’ who did not very obviously think that it was a bad thing.

I mean anyone who's trying to argue the use of the term is "standard" and non-controversial is plainly incorrect If you look the term up on Wikipedia you'll see a whole "criticism" section

For the vast majority of the history of the term "social contagion" it has been used pejoratively to describe harmful behaviors that seem to have no "rational" basis It's frequently been used in conjunction with words like "mania" or "hysteria"

People have deliberately tried to start doing this to destigmatize the term (there's some study about how "caring about global warming" is a "social contagion") but it's an obvious uphill climb
