We often mention the insane energy consumption of #bitcoin
, but not enough its insane electronic waste. Bitcoin eats 12 000 tons of custom hardware (useless for anything else) / year. This has a significant role in the current worldwide shortage on electronic components (wafers).https://twitter.com/davidgerard/status/1374302539919847425 …

Not as insane as the plastic packaging most of the overly processed food and general supplies we buy at the supermarkets. Most of it can't be recycled and ends up in landfills. But we keep up this anyway. You know what fixes overconsumption of such products? It starts with a B

I love this argument, it's amazing "Sure, Bitcoin is itself a tremendous waste of resources, but have you considered it will also SAVE immense resources by causing a global economic recession and sending you back to a simple village life"

Imagine you don't actually have any money, but some rich guy who does chooses to sit on that money rather than hiring you for a job, and therefore you've been unemployed and starving your whole life For most people this is the more relevant hypothetical

He pays as few people as he can get away with paying to do the minimum necessary work to maintain his safety and power I mean, that's always what rich guys do, but you're bragging about creating a system that reduces this threshold to the bare minimum

On some level complaints about "consumerism" always feel like hatred for the poor, disgust at a society where the poor got enough clout you have to give them video games and Funko Pops to keep them happy and they aren't satisfied with bare minimum food and shelter

overconsumption happens far more in rich countries. You must hate the poor for suggesting to keep them distracted w/ low form of entertainment & overly processed food. Everybody deserves a good home, something that's increasingly unreachable cause real estate became financialised
