We often mention the insane energy consumption of #bitcoin
, but not enough its insane electronic waste. Bitcoin eats 12 000 tons of custom hardware (useless for anything else) / year. This has a significant role in the current worldwide shortage on electronic components (wafers).https://twitter.com/davidgerard/status/1374302539919847425 …

Bitcoin bros only respond with whataboutism, the other main one is "how much energy does the fiat system use?"
-
I recently saw one attribute *all oil consumption* to the fiat currency system, apparently based on a misunderstanding of the term 'petrodollar'

Great, people who think we need to return to a simple village life to safe the planet should buy Bitcoin then
I am sincere here -
that wouldn't "save the planet" so much as it would "necessitate the death of the vast vast majority of the global population"

What i love about this common argument is how it perfectly illustrates the corrosive effect of whataboutism on someone mind. This argument relies on unrelated problems to justify btc own, proportially bigger problems while showing how cryptos guys don't care about the excuse.

It means you cannot claim both "fiat is better than bitcoin because it incentivizes (mindless) consumption" and "bitcoin is an ecological disaster". You have to pick one.
-
Nah. Fiat is good because it improves material living conditions for people. Bitcoin is bad because the waste it produces has literally no purpose, unlike all those plastics products. Bitcoin is a bad end into itself.
