I know, academic writing: fish in a barrel. But imagine a student eagerly signing up for a course on Middlemarch, Jane Eyre, Vanity Fair and Our Mutual Friend; starts reading the assigned book about them called The Novel As Event; and finds it filled with passages such as these.pic.twitter.com/QhMyP36kue

Imagine a student eagerly signing up for a course on introductory physics; starts reading the assigned book; and finds it filled with equations such as this. Turns out that every field has its advanced literature for specialists that wouldn't be given to undergrads in a survey.pic.twitter.com/tPAyplEBe4

A good physicist or chemist can usually explain in reasonably simple words to a layman what even a very complicated equation means and what it describes. Can you explain than gibberish to a layman without it reducing to triviality?

Lit professors do exactly that every time they teach. That's kind of the, y'know, *job description*.

Ok. Lets compare notes. Equations you posted are called Navier-Stokes Equations, and they describe the motion of a fluid, by relating its local flow velocity to the differences in pressure and friction. You can use it to design sea vessels, chemical reactors etc. Your turn.

That's not an explanation of the content of the equations, it's just a description of them

By your standards, this description has just proved those equations are useless, by reducing their content to "trivialities" (wow, the rate at which a fluid flows is related to pressure and friction? I coulda toldja that)

My field has no fluid in it, so they're clearly pointless anyway.

I mean a huge amount of advanced math just boils down to "chasing down *exactly* and *precisely* what the given sentence means and doesn't mean."
