The longer the COVID-19 pandemic goes on the worse life will be for everyone, including and especially children The idea that school reopening is really for the sake of the children is an obvious liehttps://twitter.com/RebeccaBrenia/status/1373665061684846599 …

The most stunning thing about Covid to me, by FAR, has been the number of people (teachers even!) who view children not as vulnerable humans in need of our best & most tender care, but as threats to their personal health and well being.

Part of what I am seeing is a mass panic attack amongst parents that the system that was dysfunctional and exclusionary before will be even worse now and they may not be wrong, but near me they are using that to pry the schools open instead of reform the dysfunctional system.

Yeah, like, there's a pandemic on; I view *everyone* as a threat to my personal health and well being. That's literally how this works.

“Children are going to fall behind!” So maybe don’t base so much emphasis on standardized test scores to determine student success. It was always BS anyway, kids will still grow up and become smart, the true loss they have is the isolation minimal socialization they’re getting.

I mean, the question continues to be "fall behind WHOM?" If everyone in the fucking country is keeping their kids out of school (and they aren't, but they should be) then there is no "behind" to "fall"?

For high school students there's some amount of truth to it but generally the issue with raising children often isn't the cost in dollars but in time. The pandemic made that worse because parents had to find ways to daycare children in addition to everything else.

The thing is that the kids really do need to be with other kids to stay healthy. My high schooler and college frosh are both listless, disinterested in most activities, and close to clinically depressed -- unless they get to hang out with a friend. The isolation is harmful, too.

We're all depressed. It's a pandemic. A largely avoidable one.
