Well yeah The happiness studies about parenting are an extreme version of "No writer likes writing, they just like having written" The happiness peak of parenting comes after the kids are adults and out of the house and whatnothttps://twitter.com/BearingMoon/status/1373256001969872899 …

Because yes, assuming you and the kids survived unscathed - which is a big assumption - and your kids grow up to be happy successful adults, then yeah now you're an old retired person with a happy successful adult in your family, which is better than not having one

But it's a hell of a risky investment The question non-parents ask is always "Aren't you afraid of dying alone?" and if it's a binary choice between that and being surrounded by loving family on your deathbed then hey sure easy choice

This feels like a reflection of a society that doesn't know how to develop deep relationships with other ppl and therefore need someone connected by blood (force) to be there.

I mean, speaking for myself I check out when the childfree convo turns to "found family" and "you can mentor without parenting" Yeah but when I said I didn't want kids I actually meant it, I don't want watered-down relationships with kids either

I am an extremely atomized and isolated person and I deliberately avoid contact with anyone Gen Z or younger because they make me uncomfortable and I fully expect that when I'm old there won't be a single person of working age I know well enough that they'd want to support me

People like me have died alone for all of human history, it's not a new thing They find the body when the apartment starts to stink and the people who take it away mutter about how sad it was but we all died thinking at least we didn't have to put up with your shit
