My whole thing is that I completely own that I may be a misanthropic freak of nature, but I have a sneaking suspicion I'm not that much of one, and if parents really are that fulfilled by parenting why don't they ever stop complaining about ithttps://twitter.com/Brien_Jackson/status/1373241380907155461 …

You can always become a better, more successful writer, the ladder goes up into the clouds, but at some point it's like "There's plenty of people out there who'd be overjoyed to be where you are now, but you're already there and you're miserable Why not let them have your spot"

Exactly - my wife says 'what does your win condition look like' because creativity is so open-ended (and so open to poisonous comparison with other writers) that you have to decide what your version of a good day's work looks like.

That's when enjoying the process comes in handy, because it's pretty much the only bit you have control of. 'Oh nobody will publish this? Well I like it - I win.' If your win condition is being Neil Gaiman, that's not at all up to you.
