My whole thing is that I completely own that I may be a misanthropic freak of nature, but I have a sneaking suspicion I'm not that much of one, and if parents really are that fulfilled by parenting why don't they ever stop complaining about ithttps://twitter.com/Brien_Jackson/status/1373241380907155461 …

I mean, have you ever heard writers talk about writing? Things can be amazingly fulfilling and also exhausting. That being said, looking for ways to escape it is something else entirely, and probably isn't trait limited to parenthood.

I used to be a writer who complained about how awful and exhausting the process of writing was and, as a result, quit writing So I'm not really the best person to make this analogy with

Maybe this is just chronic depression talking but my life is littered with examples of trying to take on the burden of temporary suffering to achieve future fulfillment and the fulfillment just never actually coming

I think it's totally right to be wary of that imagined trade-off. 'I don't want to write, I want to have written.' You have to actually enjoy the process, or you are never going to get to the end of something, much less attempt the necessary redrafting even before submission.

I mean, I've written stuff, gotten published, gotten positive feedback from it and paid well for it and all that, and was still extremely unhappy At which point you gotta ask, what are you waiting to have happen

You can always become a better, more successful writer, the ladder goes up into the clouds, but at some point it's like "There's plenty of people out there who'd be overjoyed to be where you are now, but you're already there and you're miserable Why not let them have your spot"

Exactly - my wife says 'what does your win condition look like' because creativity is so open-ended (and so open to poisonous comparison with other writers) that you have to decide what your version of a good day's work looks like.

That's when enjoying the process comes in handy, because it's pretty much the only bit you have control of. 'Oh nobody will publish this? Well I like it - I win.' If your win condition is being Neil Gaiman, that's not at all up to you.
