My whole thing is that I completely own that I may be a misanthropic freak of nature, but I have a sneaking suspicion I'm not that much of one, and if parents really are that fulfilled by parenting why don't they ever stop complaining about ithttps://twitter.com/Brien_Jackson/status/1373241380907155461 …

Because people complain about virtually everything? You straight-up say you don’t want to hear people blabbing about how wonderful being a parent is OR complaining about how much of a pain it is. You just aren’t interested. Which is fine!

But if you’ve ever done a deep dive on the psych literature on parenting and time spent on it and how it relates to metrics of happiness and life satisfaction, I haven’t seen it. There has been a fair amount written about it. There is data.

That said, research of that kind almost never even tries to address individual variability. I’m a penis-possessor and can 100% agree that as such my preference for staying home with my kids, which I chose over academia 12 years ago, makes *me* the anomalous one.

I 100% respect you for making the decision you have based on your understanding of yourself. There’s no shortage of shitty fathers out there who negatively impact their kids’ lives, and I doubt there ever has been; avoiding becoming part of that is the right ethical choice.

BUT … I do think that for SOME people, becoming a parent is a legitimately life-changing, perspective-altering thing. In the universe of human experience, that stands out.

I’m not saying there’s anything rational or universal about it. I’ve never experienced a religious or spiritual “awakening”, so I’m not speaking from experience on this, but that’s what strikes me as a relevant analogy.

I mean, this may surprise you, but I used to be extremely religious Not just in terms of being raised with dogma - there was a time when I would've told you I'd had experiences of the numinous, that I heard the voice of God in my head as my great and constant comfort

And I look back and I regret all of it Folly and delusion and waste There's nothing real in this world but what fills your belly and keeps the knives away from your back

So if anyone comes up to me with a sales pitch "You remember what Christianity was like? Well I've got another one of those for you to try!" I react with extreme reflexive hostility

My partner used to be fundamentalist religious and the surprising thing to me was when she got out there was no transition phase, no vaguely spiritual bit. She was in or out, it was either all true or none of it. And as soon as she was out, there wasn't a gram of fondness for it.

If you want to get existential, filling your belly and keeping knives away from your back *also* won’t mean shit once you’re dead. Likewise, in a geological blink my kids & grandkids along with everyone else I’ll ever know will be dead and gone.

I have no problem acknowledging this in one moment, and treasuring my kids in the next. (Thanks, sertraline and bupropion!! You’ve changed my life!!!)
