My whole thing is that I completely own that I may be a misanthropic freak of nature, but I have a sneaking suspicion I'm not that much of one, and if parents really are that fulfilled by parenting why don't they ever stop complaining about ithttps://twitter.com/Brien_Jackson/status/1373241380907155461 …

(For the peanut gallery - it's fairly uncontroversial that studies show parents are less happy than non-parents on "superficial" measures of how calm, cheerful, relaxed, etc you are at any given moment of any given day)
-
(In response to these studies, which weren't telling anyone anything they didn't know but still upset a lot of people, they did other studies saying parents report more "fulfillment" or "sense of purpose" or whatever than non-parents Again, nothing we didn't know)

Based on that metric we can all agree that parenting a small child is not for you. Medical residency would also be a bad call. My wife did both simultaneously! She’s fucking hardcore.

Amen to this. My mental health has greatly improved, mostly thanks to drugs, but all it takes is one night of bad sleep to bring it all crashing down.

in my experience, the desire for sleep above any other form of human endeavour is a very reliable way of figuring out whether I'm being sad and mad for good reasons or...just clinically depressed and need different meds
