1) A child allowance is commonsense public policy everyone who sees themselves as left of center should support 2) The most obvious way to erode this broad base of support is to become nauseatingly pious about how being a parent brings true happiness compared to working

I cannot express in one tweet how alienated I am by this stupid-ass discourse of "Most people don't have cool exciting prestige careers, most people hate working, and that's why they'd rather stay home with their kids" Staying at home with the kids IS WORKING

I absolutely hate working No argument from me on that count My skin crawls at the idea of having kids because having kids is MORE WORK than any of the worst jobs I've ever had

I'd rather go back to canvassing for sub-minimum wage on freezing cold street corners for eight hours a day I'd rather pull a double shift at the ticket counter I'd rather get carbon monoxide poisoning again

Christ, the thing about the worst bosses and the most obnoxious customers is you didn't have to take them home with you It was still just a fucking job They didn't have to be part of your damn life You didn't have to pretend to LOVE them

If that sounds horribly cold of me, well, don't yell at me, I don't even have kids Yell at my many coworkers I've had over the years who very, very obviously did like their jobs - which were not generally great jobs - more than their families
