Shazam takes place in the real world more than any MCU title, that's for sure, except maybe Jessica Joneshttps://twitter.com/nberlat/status/1372698245927989248 …

I think how poorly they did the "villains" was part of the problem

i actually thought he was really well handled. Like for how crazy big idea the set up is, they really efficiently set up what his whole thing is visually.

Shazam handles "serious" topics more deftly than pretty much any other superhero thing. And absolutely way better than the rest of the DCEU, by a mile. And I think a big part of that was that it wasn't afraid to be fun, but it also knew when to cool it and focus.

I did feel like the sexualized horror scenes didn't work so great. but other than that it was mostly well done I thought...

It was really well done. This movie really captured the "this comic is for the kids" vibe. Kid-centered presentation, still treated its audience like adults.
-
Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse is better at this (because it's amazing), but Shazam is probably second in post-2000 superhero movies in this category, ahead of Ant-Man, the rest of the MCU with Wonder Woman in there up high, and then everything else DC.

I know it's ripped from the most recent incarnation of the comics, but the foster home is the magic element that makes a slightly goofy character work as a movie too. Wouldn't work at all if Billy was a Stranger Things kid.
-
It being that specific troubled kid, with the jealous foster sibling who's pouring his pain into superhero geekery. It sells the transformation element.

It was a pretty good movie considering I dont like Shazam(Black Adam is better!). My biggest problem was Zachary Levi as Shazam did not match the performance of Asher Angel as Billy. It was a big disconnect for me. He actually acted younger & less streetwise.
-
See to me that made sense - when he's Shazam he's basically drunk/high on his powers It's the whole trope about how kids who had to grow up too fast because of their shitty childhood suddenly start acting immature when they're given freedom/security as adults
