The Expanse was mentioned elsewhere on this thread and it still gets me how the dream of colonizing Mars has, since the Golden Age of Science Fiction, been this openly hostile "Why don't we just go into space and leave all the shitty people on Earth" fantasyhttps://twitter.com/catvalente/status/1371887414785028099 …

We ALL want to escape to another planet and wash our hands of the motherfuckers we're forced to share this tiny blue marble with But the ones for whom this even feels halfway like a realistic fantasy are, you know, the motherfuckers -- the already rich and powerful people

To me that's always been the thing about fantasies of space colonization -- the more you try to bring them in line with reality the less they're about what you're running TO (Mars is a fucking red desolate rock) and more what you're running FROM

And how bad shit has to get if you're willing to leave the only planet that has, like, water and food and cute kittens and shit to live somewhere that doesn't even have air Just because it's far enough away that people can't follow you

I think it does a decent gloss with the sneering contempt Martians have for lazy Earthers on Basic, and showing how badly we fucked up the environment, still have crushing poverty and homelessness, etc. But your point is well taken.
