The Expanse is partly about this toxic mindset leading to an inevitable brutal war between Mars and Earth My own take on it is it actually softpedals how ugly this would become based on the demographics of who currently wants to go to Mars

To me that's always been the thing about fantasies of space colonization -- the more you try to bring them in line with reality the less they're about what you're running TO (Mars is a fucking red desolate rock) and more what you're running FROM
