The amazing thing to me is that a bunch of Boomer critics reacted to HBO's Deadwood as "anachronistic" by having cowboys curse and openly talk about sex etc Like a bunch of guys working as the equivalent of truckers in the 1880s followed the Hays Codehttps://twitter.com/pervocracy/status/1371814796367171594?s=20 …

One of the worst things the Hays Code did to the culture was create the impression that contemporary media is "degenerate," instead of 1934-1968 being an aberrant lacuna in an otherwise millennia-old tradition of people being super horny in public

People actually treating the incredibly corny filter they put Westerns through in the mid-20th century so the ratings board would let families watch them as though that was *actual history* Utter nonsense It's like people not realizing how much sex there is in Shakespeare

The specific language was anachronistic. The kind of "cursing" they would have done would have sounded silly to our ears.

Imagine if we still used it like that Damien Chazelle's filmography would take on a VERY different context

I used to manage a movie store, and customers who complained about swearing and sex in modern movies never believed me when I told them that the earliest films definitely had swearing and flagrant sexual promiscuity lol

It’s mental. It’s so weird, having grown up basically watching all the decades old apparatus of censorship fall apart that stops, idk, full frontal nudity and genuine cinema from coexisting (outside of like weird arthouse stuff), and realising it was all just Puritan bullshit.

I saw at least one Buster Keaton movie that showed side-boob. The Hays Code created an illusion that all old movies were "cleaner", but not only is that not true of all pre-Code films, even films made during the era tried to get stuff by the censors.

There's so much casual sex in the Hays Code era, but because it cuts to black before the actual sex, people act like everyone in those movies was chaste.

The funniest thing about that is that most scandalous swearing in the 1800s involved blasphemy- they tried some test runs of authentic dialogue but it made everyone sound like Foghorn Leghorn.
