I was rewatching Babylon 5 last night, which takes place in 2258. And I can’t stop thinking about how much I thought we’d definitely be out there in space living the sci-fi dream in 200 years when I was a kid watching this, & how now I…kind of think we won’t.

Right? Climate change happened and changed things massively, big die-off - but humans actually survived and went to the stars. It's not awesome, but it's not Mad Max. And that seems wildly optimistic some days.

The Trek timeline is pretty grim:in five years we hit the Eugenics Wars (WW3). From that suffering,we start to figure things out(again),so there are no more wars(again). If we didn’t have dreams of being better,we wouldn’t have people crazy enough to figure out how to get there.
