It is said that the crusaders biggest rave about food in Jerusalem was simple sugar cane juice, which they saw as proof of God at work. That level of sweetness was then unknown to Europe, and it was seen as miraculous.

Of course, there is a good biological reason to crave sugar, and when you have an effectively unlimited supply of it, as America does, it's pretty easy to use an effectively infinite amount.
