The usual therapist take is that depression is a blunt hammer for dealing with bad times from the point of view of a small mammal ancestor It's literally a trigger for hibernation (seasonal affective disorder being a major physical link to depression)

Our society right now is fully in thrall to what Buddhism calls the "monkey mind", the voice of FOMO Christ they're trying to make "Yes Day" a thing, that stupid meme that they made the Jim Carrey movie Yes Man about -- "What if you had a day where you said yes to everything?"
-
Well you'd spend a lot of money and exhaust yourself and fuck a lot of shit up that was better left alone How about a "No Day", where instead you say No to everything, including things you'd normally say Yes to

I got significantly better at managing the ways depression was fucking up my life by taking it seriously, querying where it was coming from, and giving depression brain a vote it often gets overruled but it gets a seat at the table now and I wouldn't give that up if I could
-
because there have absolutely been times when it was 100 percent correct and trying to save me from fucking something up I am not the kind of person who would ever attain enlightenment in a Buddhist sense but there is a lot of value in hearing that voice nonjudgementally

I mean by modern standards depression brain is not profitable. You can't encourage depression brain to consume because depression brain wants an apocalypse checklist to reassure itself that it'll survive the worst case scenario, and that's difficult to monetize.
