Annoyingly, Paranoia is a HORRIBLE and counter-productive reaction to people ACTUALLY being out to get you, just like Depression is almost certainly unhelpful when things actually ARE going to hell. Both turn up the gain until signal gets swamped with noise.

Enh Perfect rationality is unattainable and most people are dangerously biased toward trust and optimism by default

I struggle with this a lot. Because there's stuff that seems bedrock obvious that other people say is false. IE: My default belief is that nice people lie. A lot. Kindness requires rose-tinted glasses. I keep being told this is a thinking error and it keeps getting confirmed.

There is a part of me that gets that depression brain lies just about as much as generously kind humans do, but that leaves me in this bizarre limbo where absolutely nothing anybody says is default true and that's rather hard to cope with.

I have often thought this... maybe depression is actually the only rational and sane reaction to the actual reality we are faced with.

we've tried pretty hard for balance. we do think trauma, and having learned to cope with trauma, makes that easier. we're able to imagine the best, and the worst; most people don't let themselves do either.
-
in general, we think it's learnable. a lot of the problem is that society doesn't teach people to learn it.

I wonder what direction the causality runs there. Do people with depression experience optimism bias, or does a lack of optimism bias cause depression?
-
I don't even think it's causality, it's tautology The lived experience of *actually* lacking an optimism bias - not just intellectually apprehending this concept but *believing* it and acting accordingly - is called by the name "depression"
