Well yeah I mean the concept of hypnosis is just social pressure enabled by ritualistic magical thinking "Recovered memory" via hypnosis is them TELLING YOU they think you've got repressed memories and any random images or ideas that pop into your head might be truehttps://twitter.com/MelanieMoore/status/1370424852335661058 …

A lot of people have been sold a bill of goods about what hypnosis actually is, making it both sound more and less powerful than it is It isn't any kind of magic, it's just a ritual (an altered social context) for pressuring people into thinking and doing things

So the stuff about how "Hypnosis can't make you do anything you didn't really want to do" is specious Sure it doesn't drug you or hold a gun to your head in any sense To say that's the only way to "make someone do something" is nonsense

how specious it is depends on the context. I think you're conflating hypnosis and behavior modification a bit here.

not that the two aren't used in conjuction a lot, but they are distinct things.

I mean one thing I'm specifically talking about is people who felt violated after sleazy/abusive stage hypnotist acts

Brown talks about having witnessed a scene that really troubled him where a sleazy rando hypnotist for a late night bar crowd hypnotized a woman volunteer and told her to "Imagine you're naked but you can't cover yourself up"

And you never know how much of this stuff is real with stage hypnosis but afterwards he followed up with her and she really was upset, saying she really did feel naked in front of a crowd of people leering and jeering at her (including her husband) and it was triggering

Brown was self-critting with that story, talking about how as a stage hypnotist he's always aware of this delicate balance of how the whole dynamic with volunteers is this potent mixture of people's desire for attention and fear of shame
