Well yeah I mean the concept of hypnosis is just social pressure enabled by ritualistic magical thinking "Recovered memory" via hypnosis is them TELLING YOU they think you've got repressed memories and any random images or ideas that pop into your head might be truehttps://twitter.com/MelanieMoore/status/1370424852335661058 …

So the stuff about how "Hypnosis can't make you do anything you didn't really want to do" is specious Sure it doesn't drug you or hold a gun to your head in any sense To say that's the only way to "make someone do something" is nonsense

And "What you really believe" or "What you really want to do" isn't this stable, defined thing, as the Milgram experiment or the three-lines experiment or other creepy experiments with social pressure (not involving "hypnosis") all demonstrate

Derren Brown, who makes a living doing "mental magic", is also a skeptic who's very opposed to paranormal woo and has talked about how it's troubling there's no licensing or oversight of hypnotists and claims like "You can't be made to act against your nature" pass uncritically

So like a lot of the sleazier end of stage hypnotists have acts that cross the line into just straight up sexually humiliating a woman volunteer in front of a crowd using the old "Hypnosis can't violate your consent" shtick

And mostly the problem with at-home pseudo-clinical hypnosis is making claims that they can't back up any efficacy But you get into clearly abusive/manipulative shit like this recovered memory scam

Or, like, the largely unseen underworld of erotic hypnosis as an offshoot of BDSM, which, unfortunately, like other branches of kink, has a pretty big problem with sketchy dudes doing sketch shit
