Allen Hena added,
The "authenticity, history and provenance" part is completely meaningless and being used to justify the "scarcity" part This is completely obvious to everyone not in the cult
I could mint an NFT of this tweet right now and sell it to someone for $20,000, then they could sell it to someone else 15 years later But what would that actually mean, what actual benefit is being gained from owning it
The token contains a record of the "authenticity, history and provenance" of ITSELF Because it is the only thing that's being passed around It's a cheap and stupid simulation of owning a physical object that doesn't exist for no good reason
I am glad you're not the decided of what things exist for a "good reason". I think we're all fortunate for it.
It's all fun and games until it turns out your fun and games burn more energy than most small countries
The funny thing is how much the "trustless chain of provenance" matters here, how it's the huge racks of ASICs in China burning tons of coal to verify the ledger that make the ledger "real"
You could replicate *everything an artwork-linked NFT does* with an ordinary fucking website serving as a "trusted environment" Just have the original artist put up a Bluehost site for like $100/yr that says "THIS IS THE OFFICIAL OWNER OF MY DIGITAL PAINTING"
"I'm keeping the actual copyright, of course, but I'm auctioning off the right to have your name listed on my website as the 'owner' of the 'first copy' of my digital artwork Then if you sell it to someone else, just send me proof of the transaction and I'll update my site "
This would do LITERALLY EVERYTHING an NFT actually does at an IMMENSELY cheaper cost One computer updating one server on a semi-regular basis, a *tiny* and *static* energy expenditure But this doesn't feel "real" - it feels chintzy and fake That website could go down you know
It just pisses me off how perverse it is that the kind of thing everyone used to mock as meaningless and exploitative - a "vanity award" for pledging $10,000 to a Kickstarter, "you get to be listed as my #1 fan forever!" - is SO MUCH LESS SHITTY than what an NFT is
The blockchain has brainwashed everyone into thinking their stupid online database *objectively exists* in a way that no one else's does - it's decentralized and trustless and therefore REAL *Because* of the fact that it runs on an unsustainable world-burning Ponzi scheme
Your level of misinformation is absolutely fire man. Like all the forests you claim crypto is causing to burn.pic.twitter.com/eXvzxXHsom
