An art historian once told me that cryptocurrency means you can actually trace ownership of some works of art -- and that can be problematic when the ownership history (which may or may not be verifiable) adds to the value of the work.

yeah a lot of high value artwork has a really shady or incomplete provenance. This is why art counterfeiting is a massively lucrative business.

"the place of origin or earliest known history of something." "the quality of being genuine or real" "the act, state, or right of possessing something." TIL that 3 words with different definitions are also synonymous

WHAT is having its history traced, and is being proven to be real, and is having its history placed in context? It's not the artwork itself, because the NFT doesn't tell you jack shit about the actual painting

yeah provenance seems exceptionally meaningless with purely digital art.

Blockchain is propped up by ravenous rich people looking for absolutely anything to monetize and speculate about. If you aren't already rich in that ecosystem, you're a remora. It's all over if the rich get bored with it.

The whole thing reeks of self-justification for indolence. The least these people could do is keep their heads down for the obscenity of it. This whole proof-of-work system that doesn't even produce anything usable is grotesque. God, I didn't miss Twitter :/

What can you not do this with? A living person? The King James Bible? The concept of french fries?

The "authenticity, history and provenance" part is completely meaningless and being used to justify the "scarcity" part This is completely obvious to everyone not in the cult
