The "100 years" thing is an easy dunk but it does reveal a fundamental misunderstanding about what cancer is that drives a lot of false expectations about "a cure for cancer" It's not a specific disease that appeared one day, it's not caused by a germ like COVID-19 or AIDShttps://twitter.com/MucciTina/status/1369300248338853901 …

Cancer has been around for over 100 years and the best they can do is poison the patient to try and “cure” them? That’s unacceptable. Chemotherapy is criminal.

Um, Galen identified cancerous tumours before 100AD?

It's an article of faith for some that cancer is basically only a curse of our fallen modern world. There's the grain of truth in there that cancer was rarely identified as the cause of death before that. But that's a misunderstanding of cause of death statistics.

Other symptoms of cancers were often designated the cause of death, especially before medical investigation into death became routine.

Also, you're less likely to get cancer if you've already died of malnutrition at 5, or in a war or accident at 20.

Yeah the reason the "curse of cancer" falls so heavily on us compared to our ancestors or compared to other countries is the receding of the curse of violence, malnutrition and for the most part infectious disease

The reason the "effective altruism" movement took the edgelord stance and got all the flak for saying cancer charities are a "bad use of money" is that it's really, really obvious cancer isn't the main way lives get shortened and people die young in the world

Primary reason people die young is NOT cancer, as awful as rare conditions like childhood leukemia are The main killers of kids and youths in the world are still infectious diseases -- malaria, TB, parasites -- and malnutrition

And we HAVE the "cures" for those things -- antibiotics, vaccines, vitamins, mosquito nets They're pretty cheap, too, it's just that lots of people in the world are really fucking poor

And yeah not to begrudge anyone their personal crusades but on the macro scale it looks really bad to sink tremendous money and PR and effort into curing diseases that you mostly don't get until you hit middle age, because WE get them, while kids still die of malaria all the time

This irks me with (local, not foreign NGO) philanthropy in India where I see a bunch of the rich techie class donating to hospitals. Start paying an actually fair share in taxes and invest in public health infrastructure if you want to do good, not this vanity bullshit.

I think that's a form of camouflage for the wealthy that may even predate capitalism. Show off a minor contribution to evade responsibility for the real obligations.
