Since we're talking about "moral luck" and people becoming Nazis, I want to talk a little bit about this excerpt from an article about Shannon Martinez (a "deradicalized" former neo-Nazi teen who speaks about her past) Because this story sounds to me like the *real* "moral luck"pic.twitter.com/kgr7DYklby

OP went all the way there and used the term "morally lucky fucks"https://twitter.com/_bassdoll/status/1369462388550942729?s=20 …

Dude imagine being 15 and having fallen down the alt right rabbit hole, come to understand the problems with that ideology and seek out new community and some morally lucky fuck tells you that restorative justice doesnt count for you

Okay so I'm like gonna point out the *original* definition of "moral luck" doesn't even really have to do with the question of agency exists It assumes agency exists, and just talks about being judged for things you clearly have no agency over by any standard

If I point a gun at someone's head, but the gun jams and so it doesn't fire and the person is fine, then I only go to prison for "attempted murder" rather than getting a harsher sentence -- possible death penalty -- for actual murder And this is clearly, to some degree, unfair

The OP's idea of "moral luck" is a much, much more expansive idea that they just sub in and assume we're all okay with The idea that you're not responsible for *most* or *all* of the things you do because *everything* is the result of something outside your agency

"I can't help wanting to shoot that guy, that was a result of my circumstances and upbringing" Well okay then I can't help wanting to also shoot you for shooting that guy, THAT'S a result of MY circumstances and upbringing Ball's back in your court

This is what I can't stand about convos about agency and free will, in practice they're always so obviously selective Assuming that I, the person you're talking to right now, have all the moral responsibility because I'm privileged and safe and the "reformed Nazi" has zero

Maybe *you* shouldn't judge *me* for wanting to harm and kill Nazis, maybe my angry berating and scolding is the result of trauma, maybe you should practice what you preach on the Nazis and try to compassionately "deradicalize" me from that rather than berating and scolding me

The original tweet has a gaping hole for me. The alt-right teen that refutes the ideology is *also* morally lucky in stumbling upon deradicalising influences. Eventually one must address extending compassion to people who still don't give a shit.

This is the problem with our entire approach to justice. "Deserve" isn't that useful a concept for getting there. Morality isn't arithmatic like that, everyone has too many extenuating variables. Compassionate pragmatism is the only real solution.

What bothers me is, sure, you're allowed to *want* to put people in prison, or to indefinitely exclude them from society in whatever post-carceral way you imagine is possible. But I've never seen anyone explain how that actually fits in with a framework of restorative justice.

I saw several people in the other thread begin posts with "they should have to sit down with their victims and..." and I mean, what the fuck, first of all, obviously, their victims shouldn't have to sit down with *them*. So what now?
