To be lauded and celebrated as a filmmaker such that he made his living and affirmed his own worth based on how deeply he could dwell in his own pain To have immense amounts of money and fame and the ability to fly to another country to escape consequences

It is obvious that not only would his victims be better off but also he would be better off if he hadn't had power (Even continuing to live a life of luxury and celebrity as he does, he wouldn't be racked with guilt and constantly looking over his shoulder as he obviously is)

The only issue I have with the comparison is that Polanski didn't have a mental break and start raping children. That was always who he was. He was just at a point where he could get away with it. Wanda didn't even know she was torturing people, and once she did she stopped

To the extent this is actually true in-universe, I regard it as weakening what the show was talking about and trying to do Like, there was a fan theory you'd have an actual "split personality Wanda" and that the Big Bad would be "Evil Wanda", and I'm really glad they didn't

It's a big part of what makes the show meaningful that even if Wanda's initial "mental breakdown" was "unconscious", she makes a clear, voluntary choice to keep this shit going over time She's not actually "unconscious" of what she's doing, she's in DENIAL

There's no moment where she suddenly "wakes up" and is like "Holy shit, I'm pulling the strings on everyone? How is that possible?" When Vision confronts her about it in Ep. 5 he's not genuinely telling her shit she doesn't know, he's bringing up shit she refuses to talk about

(The acting in that scene was really good, and really chilling For those of us who've been in similar situations, the brittle look in Wanda's eye as she stares him down, the implicit "How dare you start saying this shit out loud," the quietly dismissive "I'm going to bed")

That's why I see her as the villain of the series. She knew she was controlling people. Absolutely. But she didn't know she was torturing people. And again, she had a mental break. It's not like she lived her whole life wanting to torture people and then had the power to do so

She... spent the whole time she was working for HYDRA explicitly wanting to torture people That's literally what she signed up for, that was the whole master plan -- get revenge on the Avengers by psychologically torturing them

She signed up to destroy Tony Stark. She didn't know how she would do it, and she didn't know she'd be given these specific powers. She didn't even know if she'd survive. But she signed up to destroy the man who killed her parents and whose weapons were bombing her country

Well, okay, after the initial sign-up and it was established what her powers were, she went ahead with the plan very enthusiastically and with full knowledge of what she was doing, including after her superiors had been defeated and it was just her and her brother doing it

Age of Ultron kinda indicates they'd never actually fought against anyone. That one dude kept saying they weren't ready. Another issue I have with how murky her beginnings were. And once they were defeated, she kept on because she found Tony Stark and knew how to defeat him

It's also different for someone to torture for revenge vs random innocents. She very much was doing it because Tony was part of the Avengers and she held them all responsible for her parents' deaths
