I'm sorry, I know it feels like kicking a puppy sometimes but the fantasy of "escaping to another planet" makes no fucking sense and the more seriously you take it the more it enables people to keep fucking up the only planet we realistically havehttps://twitter.com/SaHreports/status/1367751038263033860 …

It’s face-punchingly insane that the two wealthiest humans in the history of the world keep pushing this prospect while any reasonable skepticism gets shouted down by millions of inexplicably enraged men.

Realistically, no matter how well we take care of the earth, it’s going to be devoured by the sun. It’s far in the future, sure, but that’s no reason to ignore a problem until it demands attention. That sound sound familiar, right?

& You may hear "5 billion years" and think, "Well, that's too far away to care about" but remember life first started on this planet about 4.5 billion years ago. In terms of life on earth, we've almost reached the halfway point in our story here. It's not as long as it sounds.

This is fucking ridiculous Okay you can identify yourself with "all of life on Earth" if you want but Homo sapiens has only existed for 300,000 years It's tremendously arrogant to be planning ahead for our species existing for even one million years, much less billions

Our lifespan is finite Your lifespan as an individual, the lifespan of your society, the lifespan of your species It's arrogant delusion to think otherwise and to make plans on that basis

Like in the afterlife sense? If you think our lives are infinite, who gives a crap about Mars expeditions? Seems arbitrary.

It's the cosmic equivalent of trying to plan your great-great-grandchildren's lives. Even if we could, they don't deserve to be bound by our expectations or preferences.

Funnily enough, we've known that binding the yet-to-be-born is wrong since at least 1682, when the Duke of Norfolk's Case was decided and created the common-law rule against perpetuities
