I'm sorry, I know it feels like kicking a puppy sometimes but the fantasy of "escaping to another planet" makes no fucking sense and the more seriously you take it the more it enables people to keep fucking up the only planet we realistically havehttps://twitter.com/SaHreports/status/1367751038263033860 …

It’s face-punchingly insane that the two wealthiest humans in the history of the world keep pushing this prospect while any reasonable skepticism gets shouted down by millions of inexplicably enraged men.

Realistically, no matter how well we take care of the earth, it’s going to be devoured by the sun. It’s far in the future, sure, but that’s no reason to ignore a problem until it demands attention. That sound sound familiar, right?

& You may hear "5 billion years" and think, "Well, that's too far away to care about" but remember life first started on this planet about 4.5 billion years ago. In terms of life on earth, we've almost reached the halfway point in our story here. It's not as long as it sounds.

This is fucking ridiculous Okay you can identify yourself with "all of life on Earth" if you want but Homo sapiens has only existed for 300,000 years It's tremendously arrogant to be planning ahead for our species existing for even one million years, much less billions

It's a hypothetical that transhumanists think about since it's natural to ask when your goal is to keep going as long as you can, but it's still practically the epitome of long term problems. There's no rush at all, especially when there are so many issues to deal with right now.

I say "practically the epitome", because it still isn't as indulgent as trying to plan for _heat death_.

No, not just our species. It's planning ahead for all life. There is no guarantee another intelligent species will evolve on this planet in our absence. Humans might very well be the ones making the big important decisions for the only source of life that will ever happen.

Yep. Earth developed life within ~0.5 Gy of forming, but it took another 4 Gy to evolve sapient life, and in another Gy it will be inhospitable due to rising solar luminosity. Sapient life came in with just 20% of the window left - wouldn't bet on it happening again.

I fully expect that a million years into the future (probably less, actually) our descendants will have speciated to the point that there will be no more Homo sapiens - but they'd still be our descendants, and still part of the same 4.5-billion year chain as us.
