Yeah a lot of the triumphalist Golden Age science fiction fantasies of going out to the stars have as a FUNDAMENTAL COMPONENT OF THE FANTASY that only a tiny percentage of humans actually go and leave behind all the shitty loser humans on Earth to rothttps://twitter.com/Nymphomachy/status/1368378350293508099 …

Nerds love the fantasy that they might get to go into space some day because in their eyes it would vindicate the notion that they have a more sophisticated worldview than the normie squares who would of course go on living stagnant tiny lives on the decaying hulk of Old Earth

This is the whole point of Heinlein's The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress, like explicitly stated (and then the Moon itself becomes "too civilized" and filled with normies and squares and the asteroid belt becomes the NEW frontier where only cool people are brave enough to live)

Asimov, for all his faults (like being a handsy molesty convention creep) at least had a different attitude from most of these guys and served as a refreshing corrective when he wrote about it In the Elijah Baley books the "pioneer" types, Spacers, are explicitly the bad guys

And somehow that always results in Space Humans being mostly Anglo. Maybe with some Russians here and there, for nuance. Maaaaybe a couple of Chinese colonies if lucky. Gee, what happened to the rest of humanity in these settings, I wonder.

it was meant in a different context but this got me thinking of the revelation in one of the later hitchhiker's guide books where the precursor to humans basically sent all the people they didn't like on this Great Space Exploration just to get rid of them

Is this really unique to nerds, though? A lot of the utopian fare you see in modern political rhetoric is the same sort of thing. "What will your job be on the commune?" Motherfucker your job on the commune will be what the normies tell you it is, that's what a commune is.
