This is the whole point of Heinlein's The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress, like explicitly stated (and then the Moon itself becomes "too civilized" and filled with normies and squares and the asteroid belt becomes the NEW frontier where only cool people are brave enough to live)

Asimov, for all his faults (like being a handsy molesty convention creep) at least had a different attitude from most of these guys and served as a refreshing corrective when he wrote about it In the Elijah Baley books the "pioneer" types, Spacers, are explicitly the bad guys

Is this really unique to nerds, though? A lot of the utopian fare you see in modern political rhetoric is the same sort of thing. "What will your job be on the commune?" Motherfucker your job on the commune will be what the normies tell you it is, that's what a commune is.
